Abstract Photographers

Abstract photographes - être considéré comme l'un.

Néanmoins parfois j'ai envie d'aller all by myself.

Three Underpainting Practices for Oil Painting

The practice of underpainting is almost as large an area of study as oil painting.

The purpose of an underpainting is to establish the composition and overall light/dark pattern while initiating the development of volumes and substance to the forms.

An underpainting allows you to envision the totality of the pictorial idea. In addition to correcting drawing errors the underpainting's primary purpose is to fix the all important Notan, which is the Japanese term for light/dark harmony.

Generally speaking, there are three types of underpainting: there is the fully worked up monochromatic grisaille. This is the academic approach where little is left to chance. However, the classical grisaille of mixed white and black possesses an Achilles Heel. As the white paint ages it becomes more translucent and the black paint in the grey mix will dominate. Hence the overall picture will darken significantly, especially if there was extensive correcting of the grisaille.

If a basic oil/turpentine medium is employed this darkening is all but guaranteed. The solution is to use a thixotropic resin based medium -- such as Venice Turpentine -- which suspends the pigment and nullifies the oil's interminable darkening. Despite its name Venice Turpentine is a resin not a solvent. A confusing but important distinction.

The Renaissance approach often employed the verdaccio which is a green-hued underpainting. Michelangelo's unfinished Entombment exhibits his painting process from beginning to finish. The central Christ figure is a wholly resolved verdaccio underpainting.

The optical grisaille resolves many of the problems of the grey mixes of the classical grisaille. The imprimatura holds the light middle tones; raw umber and charcoal gray produces the darker values; and concludes with a select impasto of white lead paint that supports the highest values of the overpainting as the oil paint grows more translucent over time.

The final appearance of an optical grisaille is a painting that exhibits a higher key of color than what can be achieved by an academic grisaille or even direct alla prima.

The key for achieving a translucent grisaille is the thixotropic medium of stand oil, Venice turpentine and Damar varnish diluted with turpentine.

In oil painting your medium is to painting what sauces are to French cuisine. The all-too-common medium of linseed oil and turpentine actually degrades the paints robbing them of their lustre. You can buy ready-made painting mediums in the art store, but in my opinion this is like pouring Kraft Thousand Island dressing onto an exquisitely prepared gourmet meal.

Michael Britton is a painter, teacher and writer. Trained at the Art Students' League and the New York Academy of Art, Michael has exhibited and taught extensively in his almost 30 year career. He is the author of nine video workshops that are all available at http://www.artacademy.com/. His teaching focuses on traditional portrait drawing and painting in addition to composition and color theory.

Michael also travels and paints en plein air extensively. His comic travelogues and oil sketches are published at http://www.en-plein-air.com/.

The Oil Painting Father

The oil painting father produced by the painter Luo Zhongli exhibited in China Youth Exhibition held in Beijing in May 1980 caused a great stir. At the exhibition, some people even broke into tears when standing in front of this picture. People were very easily impressed by a touching story or a wonderful piece of music melody. However, it was quite rare that people were extremely moved with tears by a painting. In fact, what people impressed was not the picture itself, but the deep emotional feelings conveyed by the picture.

Luo Zhongli graduated from the high school affiliated to Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1968. With the impact of society, he came to Daba Mountain sand had lived there for a whole decade. Such experience made this child who has grown up in the city have a deep sensitive understanding for rural areas and farmers. Several years later, he created the oil painting "Father", which was made on the farmers in Daba Mountains.

Father expressed a kind of beauty filled with sadness. In this picture, we could see the farmer's bronzed face with wrinkles overspreading and dry lips slightly opening, rough, and work soiled hands holding a broken teacup, and a pair of tough and helpless eyes looking at you in the sun, on the background of a scene of bumper harvest. Father demonstrated all the elements that could impress people; therefore you could know why this painting was named as the "Father" from any point of view.

Although the farmer's face had been carved plenty of wrinkles over the years, and his mouth with fewer teeth had been filled with much rotten food, we could not see any complaint and anger in his face, but frustration and confusion. Even though he worked hard to create a bumper harvest, he held a broken bowl and still lived an impoverished life. The painter took advantage of ultra realism to interpret the meaning of father.

Every viewer should know that the father in this painting represents millions of Chinese farmers. It was their hard work that could create the splendor of Chinese nation and raise generations of Chinese people. He was our spiritual father. When this painting was on display for the first time, China has just experienced a decade catastrophe and Chinese people has come out from a man-made disaster. During this disaster, Chinese farmers living the bottom suffered the most. After the Third Plenary Session, people's oppressed mood needed to be released. At that time, Father came to people's eyes. Facing it, how could those conscientious people not feel dejected and burst into tears?

After Father launched, there were lots of praises mixed with numbers of critics. Critics accused the Father of defaming the image of socialist farmers. Socialist farmers should be healthy, happy and high spirited. Obviously such judgment was backward, but it could not stop the emancipation of thought and freedom of emotional expression. After National Youth Art Exhibition, Father was published in Art magazine with the current issue of two hundred thousand, which has set the highest record in art magazine.

The painting Father made me think of Mona Lisa produced by Leonardo da Vinci. When I looked at this picture with little knowledge about the Renaissance, I felt very doubtful that why Mona Lisa took an important position in art history since the figure was not pretty and her facial expression was average. With my systematic learning of historical knowledge, I did know what Mona Lisa wanted to show was the human nature to break religious imprison and the resurrection of the soul. After the emergence of Mona Lisa, people gradually discovered the human among numbers of paintings in the middle Ages. From the smile of Mona Lisa, humanist banner has been flying in Europe.

Mona Lisa: The Finest Of Da Vinci's Masterpieces

The name of Leonardo Da Vinci has been synonymous to one painting and that is the Mona Lisa. Though he has been hailed to be a great mind of his stature and was credited for some of greatest inventions in the modern world, most of us would certainly agree that there's no better work that could represent him other than this popular painting. But how come this painting is so revered compared to his other accomplishments? What makes the Mona Lisa so valuable to all of us? In this article, we are going to talk about the Mona Lisa painting which is a very famous and mysterious artwork done by one of the brilliant minds that ever walked the earth.

This article is created to know more details about the painting as well as examining some facts and fiction about the much debated Da Vinci's artwork.

Overview Of Mona Lisa:

The Mona Lisa painting is one of the most recognizable works in the whole history of art. The title of the painting was derived from the Italian word "Ma Donna" which means 'my lady', then it was eventually changed into "Mona" which has the same meaning as the previous address. So the title of "Mona Lisa" simply means 'My lady Lisa' or 'Madam Lisa'. This artwork is believed to be portrait of Lisa Gherardini, who was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Da Vinci was commissioned by del Giocondo to make a portrait of his wife some time during the age of the Italian Renaissance as a decor and to commemorate the arrival of another child in the family. Leonardo started working on this painting on 1503 and set it aside after 4 years. He then moved to France when the King Francis 1 invited him. He resumed working on the painting in 1516 which took him another 3 years to finish it. The mastery of this painting depicts the fine detail, the faint and ambiguous smile, and the distinctive gaze which brings an element of mystery.

In 1911, the painting was stolen in the Salon Carre. The museum was closed for one week and the names of Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso turned out to be the alleged culprit of the theft. Their names were eventually cleared after careful investigation. The painting was then found 2 years later when it was retrieved from Vicenzo Peruggia after and attempt to sell it. He got the idea of stealing the Mona Lisa because his friend was selling fake copies of the painting and thought the counterfeit's value would increase once the real painting had vanished.

Today, this famous painting is considered to be the most popular, the most talked about, the most replicated, and the most sung about of all the paintings in the world of art.

Some Speculations About The Mona Lisa:

Mona Lisa is often linked to many sorts of mysteries from its origin down to the details shown in the painting itself:

1. Debate on the theory of origin - Many scholars disagree on the theory that the painting is the portrait of del Giocondo's wife and it may depict other subjects.

2. Self portrait - Scholars and researchers argue the fact that this may not be a portrait of other subject, but this is actually a self portrait of the painter itself. Da Vinci was trying to paint an ideal woman and his is using his facial features to create this masterpiece.

3. A painting full of codes - Some experts believe that the Mona Lisa is painting that's embedded with a lot of codes. They believe that Leonardo did this to tell us some information that he could not openly share to anyone during his time.

Conclusion:

The painting of Mona Lisa is truly a one of kind extraordinary painting. It may be an artwork that is full of mystery, but it surely is something that all of us can be proud of.

Pen And Marker Drawings - 5 Basic Steps How To Draw With A Black Pen Or Marker

Beginners love to draw with pen and markers. When you start to learn how to draw and you see you are already comfortable using the pencil and eraser, it is time to go ahead and add pen and markers to your drawings. It is easy because you don't have the colors to worry about mixing them yet, you just have one color - black, and one material - pen or marker.

Drawing with pen and marker is a very broad subject and it is difficult to cover up everything in one article, I will mention the basic steps so you can immediately start with these drawing materials. Now you can add tones, shadows and texture to your drawing to make them look real. I recommend you experiment with different pen nibs, styles and methods to decide what you like best. Try out your favourite pens in your scrapbook before you start on your drawing.

The 5 basic steps how to draw with pen and marker. I will explain each step shortly later in this article.

Draw the picture you want.Erase all extra lines and leave only the outlines.Go over the pencil drawing with a black pen or marker.Add texture to the drawing.Add tones for lighter and darker areas.

Draw the picture you want-when you draw, make sure your lines are gentle and light, don't overdo and don't add pressure to the pencil while you draw. Keep it clear.

Erasing - clean up your drawing using a good clean eraser. If your eraser is dirty it may leave a grey color where you used the eraser so clean it before using. Erase all extra lines and leave only the outlines. I must mention that erasing the pencil marks after you added the pen or marker can ruin your drawing.

Go over your drawing with your pen - make your lines even and give it a nice flow. It is time to relax and have fun! - don't feel nervous about it. It's just a drawing. There is no absolute way to do it and you can always make another one.

Add texture to the drawing - according to the surface of the object you are drawing you are trying to describe the texture if it is smooth, bumpy, rough, like wood etc. Use a variety of strokes. Some of the common pen and marker drawing strokes are hitch-hatching, cross-hatching, dotting and scribbling too. You may study different strokes first in your scrapbook before you use it on your drawing.

Add tones and shading to your drawing - these are techniques to add lighter and darker values of the black to show the form of the object you drew. there are light, medium and dark tones. The shading shows where the source of light is coming from. If the light is coming from the top left so you need to add shading to the opposite sides - the bottom right.

As I said, these are the basic steps how to draw with a black pen and marker. Pen and marker drawings can be very rewarding so go ahead and start - have fun with it!

Drawing and Painting In Italy

Whatever your creative pursuit, when the opportunity arises to be a part of the most inspiring environment, the most exhilarating atmosphere for your particular artistic discipline or genre, I think that you owe it to yourself and even the gifts that you've been blessed with to take it.

Drawing and painting in Italy is for me, a very different experience than creating my work or teaching in my native New York. Please do not misinterpret this... New York city arguably remains the single greatest modern and contemporary art scene in the world. I adore it's energy and unmatched cultural exchange. However, picking up that charcoal and putting it to paper while in Italy, specifically the region of Tuscany, well... that is very different. With that first intended visual description, you have instantly joined the ranks... and these are revered and exalted ranks... of those who decided to make a very human statement... the artistic statement at it's highest levels. I see art as being perhaps the best narrative on humanity. It is either the subject of the human condition (narrative, historical painting or portraiture) or it is simply the personal translation of what is around us... profound enough to the individual to be worthy of canvas and paper. This kind of statement, of course, can come in the form of writing, music, performance and fine art. Drawing and painting in Italy though, is very much like driving at the Indianapolis 500 or performing at Carnegie Hall... the act alone is certainly amazing and enjoyable enough, but the company that you keep is historically staggering.

The Renaissance was a period that started in the region of Tuscany and it represented the return to the Classical emphasis on humanity. The artwork produced during this period continues to be a benchmark of excellence and an inspiration for all who follow in the footsteps as painters, sculptors, designers and architects. If we put the history aside, if one is not as well versed in the stories and the periods, Italy still inspires those who draw and paint in ways that few other places on earth can. If you are in the right location (and there are many) a simple turn of the head can reveal public art, incredible structures, classic designs and natural beauty all coming together.

Some even see drawing and painting in Italy as something akin to climbing Mount Everest. The obvious major difference here is the physical toll and personal peril involved in that one time, personal accomplishment. My advice, unlike for that dangerous and rewarding travel to the peak of the mountain top, is to try and "climb" towards this creative summit as often as possible. Try to experience the feeling of creating where creativity was first appreciated the most. The quote from the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer sums up the unique appreciation for art during the Renaissance as he compares the status of the artist in his native Germany to Italy: "Here (Italy) I really am somebody, whereas at home I am just a hack." Times have certainly changed, but those brushstrokes somehow, still feel indescribably different when applied in my art studio in Lucca or looking out at that Tuscan landscape. The food and wine aren't bad either.

In my next article, I will discuss drawing tips.

Abstract Art - Step by Step to Creating Abstract Art

An artist may paint a dog by rearranging its face and body parts (just like Pablo Picasso did with his famous painting of a woman's face) to make it seem more approachable and trustworthy. This is called abstract art. An artist can change the reality with a painting and make the viewer appreciate the cleverness of the idea.

To create a successful piece of abstract art, the artist must make the object or objects so different that it moves the viewer. The latter must like and feel affected by this abstract art. For example, a blade of grass may look very different after painting it like a sharp knife.

Remember that what matters most are the viewer's feelings towards the painting. A piece of this art may do nothing for you but as long as it can affect the majority of people's emotions, it has succeeded.

The key is to understand that abstract art is based around feelings. Here are 6 steps to help you create your first abstract art painting.

Creating Abstract Art - 6 Steps

1. Choose a feeling that you want to focus on for your painting. This could be your current feeling or another person's mood who you are affected by.

2. After you have decided on the feeling, look for an object that you think relates to the emotion you want to paint. You may need 2 - 3 items before finally deciding on the object you want to paint.

3. With the chosen object in front of you, imagine how you are going to portray it in your painting to amplify the feeling you want to share.

For example, if you have chosen a plant to display the feeling of loneliness, think about what you can add or take away from the object to magnify the loneliness feeling. For example, you make consider adding droplets of water to the leaves to represent tears.

4. Next, think of the background for your object(s) that will further showcase the feeling of being lonely. You could paint a cold, dark night, an empty hall or an abandoned backyard.

The background is just as important as the object although the latter is the one that everyone focuses on. One cannot exist without the other.

5. Now that you have confirmed the object and the background, get into the mood that you are trying to paint. If you are happy, then being feeling sad will not help your painting much. Your current mood affects your final painting.

6. As you are painting, new ideas will develop which you can consider to add to your painting. Take your time with the painting and write down the ideas if you think they are feasible.

At the end of the day, look through the list of ideas that you have written down and see if they can be added to your painting.

The Beauty Of The Edward Hopper Nighthawks Painting

There are a number of paintings in the world that are very recognizable, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks painting is one of them. Just hearing the name, one would assume that the Nighthawks painting would be one where birds are circling the night sky, however it couldn't be farther from the truth. It is a painting that takes on a little more meaning because those hawks are actually people sitting in a diner downtown late at night.

The Nighthawks painting is arguably Hopper's most famous painting and is also one of the most recognizable paintings in American Art. It was painted in 1942 and a few months after it was painted, it was sold to the Art Institute of Chicago for a total of $3,000. It has remained in their gallery ever since.

Hopper's Nighthawks painting has been used in a number of different movies, TV shows and even cartoons. Often times, the characters portrayed in the diner are a little different, however, to use as the show needs. A perfect example was an episode of the Simpsons where Homer and some of his friends and family were the characters inside the painting.

Throughout the life of Edward Hopper, he made a number of scenes, both urban and rural, and they all reflected his personal vision of what modern American life looked like. As a result Edward Hopper's Nighthawks painting is not a painting about birds or hawks. The nighthawks can be considered night owls - those that stay up late, talking and drinking and eating in the city.

As Hopper painted, he would make sketches of all of his paintings in a journal and write little descriptions of the technical detail. His wife Jo would often go back and add additional information about the theme and illuminate it a little more. When looking at the journal in regards to the painting, it can be seen that the title was originally going to be "Night Hawks" as opposed to the current version without a space.

This painting has become so popular that many creative vendors turned it into posters and duplicated in various styles. The idea of having a diner in downtown at night filled with people is a great way to encompass the American life, which is why the Nighthawks painting has become so popular and is is one of America iconic art.

Jo Hopper, his wife, has also hinted in the journal notes that the title also stem from the beak-like noses on the men who sit up at the counter in the Edward Hopper Nighthawks painting. Edward says that the restaurant is reminiscent of one that is on Greenwich Avenue where the two streets meet. He, of course, took some creative license and made the restaurant bigger and simplified the scene tremendously.

Today, the Edward Hopper Nighthawks painting has inspired musicians, directors, painters and many others because it is such a beautifully executed look at American Life. It will continue to be shown in film and TV because when many think about American life and art, they think about Edward Hopper's contribution to the art world. It has been a gorgeous piece of art and while it still remains in the same place for over 60 years, reproductions of it have helped propelled the painting further into the art world, especially modern art lovers.

Sir Alfred Munnings

Sir Alfred Munnings has long since been hailed as one of the greatest equine artists of all times. On 14 November 2012 an exhibition of his work went on show at The Richard Green Gallery in Bond Street, London. Early next year a feature film entitled Summer in February is due to be released, it tells the story of the early part of Munnings career including his tragic love affair with his first wife Florence, famously depicted in the painting Two Lady Riders Under An Evening Sky. The equestrian fraternity who has long since recognized the brilliant way in which Munnings painted horses is avidly awaited the release of the film which stars Dominic Cooper as Munnings and Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame, as his friend Gilbert Evans. The producer of the film, Jeremy Cowdrey, has expressed surprise that no such similar film has ever been made, he explained 'Munnings as a personality and character was so interesting and lively he bounced off the pages of the novel and Dominic Cooper who plays him in the film, just bounces off the screen'. Here at Equestrian Escapes we just can't wait, Downton Abbey and horses, does it get much better!

The Sir Aldred Munnings Art Museum in Dedham Essex has lent 25 works to the Richard Green Gallery for the exhibition currently showing in London, including Miss Millicent Baron on Magpie, arguably one of the best examples of Manning's work that first demonstrated his true understanding of the personality and anatomy of a fine horse (and lady!). In addition to his paintings of beautiful horses and ladies set in spectacular English countryside Munnings was also employed as the official World War 1 war artist to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade. During the war he painted many scenes, including a mounted portrait of General Jack Seely entitled Warrior in 1918 (now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa). He bravely worked on his canvases close to the German front lines and even came under shell fire as his unit was forced into a hasty withdrawal. In 1918 he painted Charge of Flowerdew's Squadron in what has become known as "the last great cavalry charge" here Gordon Flowerdew was posthumous awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in this successful engagement with entrenched German forces.

Munnings who died in 1959 aged 80 enjoyed an outstanding career and will no doubt be associated with equine painting for many generations to come.

Things You Need to Know About Watercolour Painting

Painting with watercolours is a fascinating medium and perhaps a little more challenging than oils or acrylics. This is because such things as bleeding can occur and if you make a mistake it cannot be painted over, making it less easy to control.

That being said, painting with watercolours is a very hard choice to resist. Below you will find a few basic terms and techniques that you may find useful.

Terms Used in Watercolour Painting

Blotto Painting: using tempera paint apply it to one side of a piece of paper and then fold it in order to create a second image, the result being very similar to an ink blot.

Flat Wash: a smooth covering that is even or uniform with no shading or tint changes and is used for backgrounds or sizeable areas of the watercolour surface.

Graded Wash: is used to cover the painting surface. It is thinly or lightly coloured and is then gradually made thicker and darker in order to achieve a light to dark effect. Vice versa to achieve a dark to light effect.

Wash: a thin and normally translucent paint layer which is used in backgrounds or for covering large surface areas.

Waterbrush: A waterbrush is just like an ordinary paintbrush. It has a shaped tip made out of bristles but unlike your typical brushes, this one has a small reservoir or vat attached to it that holds water. When in use, the water flows in a slow and controlled manner to the bristles, allowing for continuous wet application.

Wet on Dry Watercolour Painting: This is watercolour painting applied to a dry surface which will bring about cleaner, sharper, more defined details/lines.

Wet in Wet Watercolour Painting: applying watercolour paint to a wet colour surface allowing for better merging, blending, bleeding, blurring, undefined lines or details.

Using quality art materials will help you to create your very own masterpiece and the purchase of quality art books will more than help too as they will give you much more information and ideas than what you see here.

Prior to painting it is necessary to prepare and stretch your paper properly. You do this by wetting and taping the paper down onto a wooden board to prevent wrinkling or buckling when applying the paint. Leave the paper to dry naturally, if possible, so you may need to start this particular process the day before you want to start your painting.

Applying a Wash to Paper

Wash your paper using clear water and a large, wide brush to dampen it. Stretch your arm out fully and move across the surface width with one continuous stroke, continuing with the same brush and colour until the surface is covered evenly. To apply a graded wash, dampen the surface, make the first complete stroke with the colour and with little water and add a slight amount of water for each successive brush stroke.

Using the Wet in Wet Technique

Paint a clean water image or shape and with the second action dip brush in watercolour and apply. The added colour will disperse, or bleed, into the wet space and to its edges. Experiment with painting a watercolour image or shape and using a second colour to add to the first to create bleeding and blending of colours.

Watercolours are versatile art materials and art books are necessary to boost your confidence. By painting with watercolours or inks you can achieve textures, shapes, brush strokes, contrast and values similar to any other painting medium. However, achieving luminosity in watercolours is much easier than with other paints.

Although many other colours are available, using black ink will restrict your work to grey scale or black and white. This can be helpful if you are just starting out or if you desire clarity and a strong composition in your art.

All you need to start painting in watercolours are art books and supplies, a willingness to learn and the mindset to succeed.

Important Considerations When Searching To Buy Paintings

Paintings are still very popular today even with the advancements in photography. Possibly, this is because of the effort and creativity used in creating these works of art. Otherwise how can you explain the high amounts of money people ray to get these artworks. Nevertheless, you do require paying exaggerated figures to get good paintings. The important thing is to know where and how to search for paintings for sale.

Nowadays, you will save a lot of energy when you choose to buy online. There are sites offering numerous artworks from renowned as well as upcoming artists in their online stores. This gives you the chance to buy the artwork you want whenever you are ready. Such sites might also offer you a chance to make more savings by offering free shipping to any part of the world and seasonal discounts.

You have to be very certain of the specific painting you are looking for. Note that a lot of paintings for sale are always valued by their inherent values, which are not easy deriving. If sufficient time is not spent on evaluating its value, loopholes that might lead to overlooking critical aspects will be created. You can also use the category of painting to make your choice. For example, you might decide to have a portrait, nature, historical or other categories that appeal to you.

If you are not sure which artwork category is best for you, you can look for common styles that are used to group artworks. There are many styles ranging from classical, mannerism, expressionism, naive art, naturalism, orientalism and renaissance among others.

The trick here is to browse all these styles. The category that features the most artworks that you like can become your new favorite. You should therefore keep watching this style category for new additions and in no time, you will find yourself a good painting.

Quality is also an important consideration when looking for these pieces of art. A good provider will offer museum quality hand paintings. These are made by experienced professionals in this area. Preferably, the provider is supposed to have artists on hand so that they can recreate any photos that are not available. This way, there is no way you can fail to get a desired painting.

Though people will always prioritize the price when shopping online, it should be noted that getting a high quality item at low price is not an easy thing. Though this is the case, you might be lucky to find websites that offer artworks with museum quality at 50 to 70 percent of gallery prices. Remember, this is only applicable when the artwork comes from the studio. You can have an assurance of quality as the savings you obtain are drawn from overhead eliminations.

With the above information, it is easy to get paintings for sale. For those opting for an online purchase, the provider should guarantee that the pieces are watchfully reproduced, inspected and are free from defects. Good providers will offer a money-back guarantee with at least thirty days to get the item shipped to you as well as allowing you time to inspect the painting.

Fine Art - The Deep Meaning of Painting

Fine art is translated from the French term "beaux arts" which means that it originated from France. This art form does not only include visual paintings. Nowadays it includes sculptures, photography, opera, poetry, acting, drawings and music.

When you consider this wide scope, you will start to realize that there is much more to it. Maybe even the way you design your house can be considered fine art.

So why is this form of art a deep meaning of painting? How does one determine what is fine art? In this article, I will focus on the art in relation to paintings.

The core principle is 'beauty'. An artist's work which makes the viewer sees and feels it as beautiful, can be considered as fine art. Perhaps it is better to explain what it is not.

An exact painting of a family sitting on the sofa together will not be considered as this form of art. It may be a lovely painting that looks very life-like, but it is a straight forward painting. There is nothing special about it. It needs to be special and attention grabbing.

An advertisement board painting of the latest luxury sports car may attract many fanatics to an exhibition but nevertheless, it is just a painting which many skillful artists can imitate. It is rarely called fine art.

Reading the above two examples, it can be seen that it has to be more than just looking beautiful.

A painting can be considered fine art when it is not a straight forward painting of an object. It has to be beautiful, unusual, meaningful and portrays the feeling well.

A Vincent Van Gogh painting is an example which is easy to relate to because it is so famous. The chair, fruit, sunflower and the skies are not painted as they are. Van Gogh's paintings were not an exact copy of what he saw. He painted the objects very differently but you can still recognize the object.

This style of painting is a way for the painter to show his feelings which will effectively channel through to the viewer. Fine art is imagining what the object truly means to the painter and having the ability to transfer it onto a painting.

If you see a painting of objects that are painted differently such as rectangular apples, and in addition you can sense what the artist is feeling at the time, then he has successfully created a fine art painting.

If an artist is famous then his paintings will no doubt draw a lot of attention and increase in price. However, this does not mean that you will also like the painting. The beauty of a painting is in the eye of the beholder. What one person considers a fine piece of art, it may look boring and uninspiring to you.

Kenth Bender, artist, born in Sweden 1947 and began as an artist back in 1984. 1992, all his paintings were lost/stolen at a Group Exhibition. He lost all inspiration and took a 20 year break. 2010, he was invited to exhibit in Denmark, Germany and USA. 2012 invited from April to September, to 7 galleries from around the world. The Gift of Art - Passe or Perfection?

When it comes to finding the right gift, have you ever heard, "... oh, you got me art - couldn't you find a real gift?" Conversely, can the gift of art rank high among the most ideal ways to make an impression in the holiday season? Wayne Weberbauer, an internationally commissioned fine artist working out of the Los Angeles area, is one who acknowledges that artwork can range anywhere from "cheap trash" to unique pieces that stand for a lifetime among the best of any gifts that can be given. But it has a lot to do with the aesthetic palate of the viewer and the message from the giver. Did the giver understand the recipient enough to make the art choice something of worth?

Rather than focusing on the lower end of what passes for "art", let's look at what true art can do. It can bring enrichment to relationships of almost any kind. It can bring loved ones closer together, it can make parents proud or children feel important and privileged among them all. It can acknowledge grandparents for a lifetime of accomplishment - for founding and carrying forward a family and its traditions. One piece of artwork can become a family treasure of increasing sentimental and even financial value. Art can remind us of the most pleasurable memories of pets and places, events and accomplishments.

Why then is it possible that such impressions and memories are to be had from art? Well, there is "art" and there is "Art!" In other words, the better the quality of the impression or emotion or idea that is being put across from it, the more it could be considered art. To illustrate, let's describe a painting as "a flat piece of cotton-based canvas with colored oils spread on it in various combinations and patterns." OK, compare this to, "a fantasy oil portrait which spotlights the most striking and impressive personality characteristics of the subject, using lighting effects the like of which have not been seen since Vincent van Gogh." It may be obvious that both descriptions could apply to the same piece of art, but what we are talking about is the quality of the piece. There are writers whose skill in description of art can make one desire to have that particular piece. There are others whose "skill" can make a fine piece sound cliché and unwanted. And here again, we are talking quality of the writer's art.

Wayne Weberbauer has some examples of such works and he does commissioned artwork. He is even available for preparatory length of the holiday season. Anyone can see some examples of his work or get in touch with him for opinions or consultations at his website: http://www.wayneweberbauer.com/.

The True Value of Learning Watercolor Painting With the Best Possible Ways

Painting is one of the most admired arts created by amateur and professional artists today. It represents exceptional talent through allowing an artist to express his or her thoughts. To name few of the most utilized materials to paint include canvas, plastics and wood.

One of the easiest ways to paint is through watercolor painting. However, you have to learn the exact methods on how to paint using watercolors. It is very important to determine the exact combination of hues to produce a remarkable artwork or masterpiece. Remember that if you cannot master the exact color mixtures, you might end up completing a disappointing work. Therefore, be very careful when combining the colors and learn how to stroke the paintbrush perfectly and smoothly.

For people like you who are revealing interest to this kind of hobby, it is best to understand the right information to discover the exact forms of painting. Although some folks find it easy even if they have not tried it, creating a masterpiece with watercolors require precise concentration and continuous learning. You have to master how to blend the colors with water and stroke your brush to finish your artwork the right way.

Compared to other painting materials like acrylic or oil paints, it is easier to correct any mistake. You can simply cover the mistake with another color layer and repaint afterwards. On the other hand, watercolor painting has a different case and once you create a mistake, you cannot just repaint your work. Meaning, you to have to start all over again using new materials and repeat the design you want. Because of this, it is very important to work cautiously, avoiding any carelessness that can ruin your artwork and wasting your time and effort.

What is good about doing artworks using watercolor paints is that you can use any time of paintbrush. This allows you to choose the best brush that will provide you the exact convenience you want. Again, make sure to perfect your strokes, color combinations and follow your ideas with care. By the way, if we look at most of the popular artists today, they do not just focus on using paintbrushes. They use their hands or feet to create an impressive artwork that can definitely grab the attention of the people.

Nowadays, numerous art galleries worldwide feature the best artists for watercolor paintings. Most of these artists who created these artworks are popular and experienced already. Of course, you can find affordable items up to the most expensive paintings in the world.

The Importance and Meaning of the Last Supper

The last supper art is one of the most significant reminders of Jesus Christ's mission and legacy on earth. It makes Christians remember God's unconditional love for the world that He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins.

The last supper is also one of the most important events in Jesus' short yet meaningful life as a man. It was the time when He gathered His disciples together to celebrate the Jewish Passover which was also the last meal that he had with them.

The Passover

In the Old Testament, the Hebrews celebrated Passover by killing a lamb and using its blood to mark the door posts of their homes to protect them from the plague that God sent throughout Egypt. The blood tells the Spirit of God to pass over that house and not kill the first-born son in the house.

When Jesus celebrated His last Passover meal with His disciples, He foretells the betrayal of one of His disciples that would lead to his arrest and death. At this meal, He established an intimate friendship not only with His disciples but to all who believe in Him. He also commanded them to love one another, and to celebrate The Lord's Supper in His memory.

The Last Supper

The last supper symbolizes Jesus' act of offering His body and blood to God as payment for our sins. He chose to die for us to redeem us from spiritual death, yet He only asked us to remember Him for that ultimate sacrifice. The importance and meaning of The Last Supper is Jesus' show of love and obedience to the Father, and God's unconditional love for human kind. Jesus is the lamb that God sacrificed in order to set people free from spiritual destruction.

Many people remember The Lord's Supper by celebrating it during prayer meetings, church services and through the arts. Pastors, priests and religious leaders perform it to sanctify the Lord and to remind people their sins are forgiven by the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

This is what Matthew 26:26-30 says:

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Aside from celebrating the last supper in churches and religious ceremonies, many people remember their deliverance from sin by adorning their homes with high-quality reproductions of The Last Supper art. Original paintings are scarce and they can cost a fortune. It would be impossible for many to own. But you can acquire reproductions of these from licensed art galleries and publications. The last supper art is not like any ordinary work of art; it portrays a visual image of God's love and forgiveness.

Floyd H. Jones is an art enthusiast who deeply values the importance and meaning of salvation in our lives. His zeal for art and love of God helped him to establish Art World Publications, a fine art canvas reproduction outfit in San Diego that delivers reproductions of The Last Supper, sculptures, and other works of art. He doesn't do business just for the sake of profit; he does it to share his passion and make people enjoy the beauty and spiritual representation of The Last Supper for years to come.

Oil Painting 101: How to Appreciate Oil Paintings

Since the dawn of time, man has expressed most of his innermost desires and thoughts through art. From prehistoric cave drawings to today's masterpieces, art is indeed a timeless imitation of life itself.

Among the many forms of art, paintings are among the most popular. Whether they are made of watercolor, acrylic, or oil on canvas also command some of the highest prices in the world of art. They are often housed in the finest galleries and museums and even some private residences. And because of this perceived high price tag and air of exclusivity, many people are put off, if not intimidated by art.

Which is really sad, as art is meant to be enjoyed by everyone and not just those who have money to splurge on high art or those people who frequent galleries and museums.

For one thing, oil paintings are not entirely expensive. While it is true that those made by the masters command prices which are prohibitive for most people, various affordable options are available for anyone who is interested in owning art.

Secondly, you don't have to be a connoisseur to appreciate art. All you need is a keen eye for details, some patience, and of course an enthusiasm to open yourself to art.

Art should 'Talk' to you

Appreciating art is always a personal experience. How an art form appeals to you may be different from how it affects another person. So it is important to look closely at a painting, for example and see how that piece of art affects you.

It may not look beautiful or appealing at first so you may have to pay closer attention until that painting takes your attention in some way. Spend some time looking at it. How do details such as the choice of colors, placement of objects, or any other detail in the painting affect you?

What is the painting trying to tell you? What is the story it is trying to convey? How art 'talks' to you is very important in appreciating art.

Look for symbols

Part of appreciating art, such as oil on canvas paintings is figuring out what the artist is trying to say through his work. Often, an artist would hide his message through symbols which he carefully integrates in his composition. Look for these symbols to make your experience richer and have a better understanding of the artist.

However, such symbolisms should only be your guide in the inner workings of an artist's mind and heart and should not cloud you on how that piece of art affects you.

Style

How an artist chooses to express himself through his artwork is often reflected on the style he picks to translate his message to the canvas.

Some would choose to be as lifelike as possible as seen in some works by the Renaissance masters while others would abandon this and be bolder in their works such as seen in abstracts and impressionists styles.

While some artists would show controlled and precise brushworks, others would be more haphazard in the use of their brushes and paints, creating a wild and chaotic play of strokes and colors.

In appreciating art, it helps to look for these differences in styles and see why the artist would want to execute his work that way.

The above guides are not meant to produce an instant art expert in anyone. It is only meant to start you on your way towards appreciating art. Just remember that art is meant to make you happy, angry, sad, nostalgic, hopeful, and various other feelings in between.

Plein Air Requires a Direct Approach As the Natural Light Is Ever Changing

Painting outdoors directly from nature can be a little daunting at first but once a routine is established then I consider this Plein Air technique the best practice for both beginners and experienced painters. The artist must paint quickly, be spontaneous and decisive with his brush strokes as the natural light is ever changing. This forced discipline is the best way to improve as an artist in my opinion, as quick decisions must be made and rendered accordingly.

Painting outdoors can be a challenge for any artist but if the elements are on your side then the process can be quite enjoyable. Unlike painting pictures from photographs in the studio, the end result of a Plein Air painting is usually more of a personal statement which is clean and fresh.

I believe it is not always necessary for an artist to travel far to find inspiration. In fact I have been returning to the same scene to paint this group of old mill houses for 25 years. These cottages always appear different due to the changing light, seasons and time of day. My use of artist's licence will be an essential factor also in making sure each finished artwork is unique and original..

Plein Air is my favorite painting method and on this particular morning the light was changing fast so I chose my vantage point and set up the easel. The mill homes displayed a strong composition but required a little imagination regarding color enhancement. I was aware not to paint everything I could see but simplify by selection.

My approach was to suggest the far distance and methodically work forward. I began by covering the whole canvas by blocking in the main shapes and my basic composition was established. The sky was brushed on followed by a distant inlet showing through trees. The old sagging roofs of the mill houses and their leaning water tanks were exaggerated, all of which added character and age.

There was a hint of pink in the sky when I arrived, however it was no longer there due to the changing light but was remembered and included. My attention was momentarily stolen by fighting magpies. However, the aroma of wildflowers along with the sound of wind in trees made me aware that all my senses were simultaneously activated. I felt as though a sixth sense of intuition occurred which was fuelling creativity.

Some rooftops were already colorful, others were shiny, metallic and bland. I changed these colorless areas to bright pink, blue and orange. More artist's licence was used to add bright reds and yellows to white sheets on washing lines. These same colors were applied to curtains, doors and to the many flowers in surrounding gardens. A strong color statement was now becoming apparent.

Another break in concentration occurred when a gust of wind almost blew over my easel. I quickly secured it with a log. To paint from nature, you must contend with it also. There was an old picket fence and letterbox in the foreground. These were included as I considered them to be an essential part of the overall composition. A grey bitumen road occupied the extreme foreground. However, I remembered this was once a pink sandy track many years ago, so I decided to return to that era and use this sandy track as an all important lead into the picture.

Using a sharp tool I scratched lines into the thick wet oil paint on roofs and walls of each mill house. This gave the impression of corrugated iron and timber cladding of which the cottages were made. Free ranging hens and a little wispy smoke from one chimney only added life to suggest that someone is home.

Finally, using the same sharp tool, number 25 is scratched into the foreground letterbox. This signifies the number of years I have been returning to this historical place to paint pictures of these enchanting cottages.

How To Paint Portraits

I am going to show you how to paint a portrait from a photo, and make it symmetrical. You will be painting like a pro after it's all said and done. you will learn how to mix colors to create either light skin or dark skin. You will learn a trick on how to make fine lines. You will learn how to create dark and light shadow. You will impress and bless people at the same time with your art work.

Symmetrical paintings:

Have you ever dawn a picture and it looked kind of lop sided? This is what you do to keep that from happening. Use a grid. Let's say that you have a photo that is 8"x10" and you want to paint it bigger on a canvas that is "16x"20, you will want to take a pen and draw grid on your photo 1/2"x1/2" and then take a pencil and draw grids on your canvas 1"x1". So, now we have grids on both the photo and the canvas. What do we do next? The grids will help get your drawing precise on the canvas. After we have the picture drawn on the canvas, we want to circle the shadows in the photo. Look closely at ever little shadow that you can find. After the shadows are circled, go back and draw the shadows onto the canvas. Your drawing should look like a "paint by number" now.

We are ready to paint!

The great thing about oil paint is that if you get tired than you can leave the painting and finish it later. If you mess up than you can fix it easily, because the oil doesn't dry fast at all. I've had some paintings take 2 weeks to dry.

If you know how to put makeup on than you should not have a whole lot of trouble painting a portrait with oil paints. With a darker skin you will want to use dark brown, black, white and red. With a lighter skin you will want to use brown, red, and white. For shadows you can use the skin color along with black and red to darken it. If the skin is too dark than you can lighten it with a dab white or very light brown. If the skin is too light than you can darken it with a dab of brown, dark brown, or black. You can play around with it because the paint does not dry like a water paint.

Fine Lines:

This is a tip for those that do not have small brushes to make smaller lines. You can dab your brush in paint thinner and then mix the thinner with paint. The paint will become very thin, therefore, making it easier to create very thin lines.

There you have it! That is how I paint some of my portraits. I hope that this has given you a little insight on painting, and hopefully you can take this and run with it.

Practice the way that YOU paint and bless many, many people with your Talent/Patience.

The Influence of Native American Art on the Works of Jackson Pollock

Paul Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a well-known American artist who was influential in abstract and expressionist art. Although his short personal life, wrought with alcoholism and perhaps bipolar disorder, was arduous, his particular painting techniques, deemed to be drawn from Native American art, appeared effortless. Many critics agree that Pollock was unmistakably one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. To this day, his enigmatic work continues to be admired, studied, and analyzed by art students, critics, and enthusiasts.

Art Education

Pollock received a rather traditional art education at the Manual Arts High school in Los Angeles and later at the Art Students League in New York, with his brother, under the direction of Thomas Hart Benton. However, he soon strayed from the conventional and delved into his own unique forms of artistic expression. Having grown up in Arizona, Pollock had an intrinsic understanding of Native American art and culture that would prove to be career-altering exposure for this young artist.

Art Techniques and Media

During the 1940s, Jackson Pollock's techniques changed dramatically after he witnessed Native American Indian sand painting demonstrations at The Museum of Modern Art. Learning that Indian medicine men sprinkled colorful sands onto surfaces in a seemingly random and somewhat trance-like way, Pollock began to formulate a similar technique which he would later refer to as the "dripping method."

Pollock's process consisted of pouring, flinging, and dripping paint onto a canvas on the ground while simultaneously circling the piece in a dance-like movement. The dance was never complete until the painting had revealed itself, at which point the artist would stop abruptly and announce that the masterpiece was finished. Because of his non-conventional techniques, Pollock came to be known as "Jack the Dripper."

Jackson Pollock's media were about as varied as his methods. Trading in traditional paint brushes for all sorts of household items such as utensils and even sticks, Pollock experimented with the effects of each tool. He often found himself on the floor with his work, a position he came to prefer as he believed it fostered a certain intimacy between art and artist.

Native American Influences

Although Pollock never admitted an intentional imitation or following of Native American art, he did concede that any similarities were probably a result of his "early memories and enthusiasms." Without doubt, similarities do exist. In addition to the methodology he adapted from the Indian medicine men of the West, Pollock expressed an interest in primitive subject matter akin to much of what is seen in traditional Native American art (i.e. birth, life cycles, nature, and animals). This symbolism is perhaps most apparent in his 1943 painting entitled 'Guardians of the Secret'.

Although 'Guardians of the Secret' is clearly abstract, as all of Pollock's paintings are to some extent, some representational images in the composition are worthy of mention. These images appear to be two large guards, resembling totem poles, standing on opposite sides of a rectangular image which seems to be a painting within the painting. Some critics have suggested that this centerpiece is in fact "the secret" in question. Art analysts have also drawn the connection between this work of art and Pollock's Native American influences since Indian sand paintings were often considered sacred and guarded in much the same way as the inner-painting in the 'Guardians of the Secret' is protected. The interpretation would suggest that the secret in the painting was Pollock's artistic techniques embodied in the inner painting, but this may be an oversimplification of the message Pollock was trying to convey. Perhaps the inner painting-an overwhelmingly abstract piece with only one visible representational scheme appearing as a hieroglyph or code of sorts-points to something much more than Pollock's artistic methods. If indeed Pollock intended that the image resemble an Indian sand-painting, then he undoubtedly meant for the message to be a profound one.

Art critics will most likely continue to speculate as to the true meaning behind 'Guardians of the Secret'. Since Jackson Pollock himself deferred to the painting, not the artist, as the controlling force behind the art, it could be that not even he knew the message that is guarded so intently. If the artist did know the secret, it was unfortunately buried with him in 1956 when he succumbed to his alcoholism in a one-car accident at the young age of 44.

Tips On Photographing Your Art For The Web

Presentation is everything; especially on the internet where the only impression you can make is what is seen. A poor presentation can make the difference between getting a sale and being accepted into an on-line show. For the judges to get an accurate idea of your art, the image you send must match the colors in the art and be sharp and clear. For many of us, taking a good photograph of our art is hard. Before you send off the photo of your art you should 1) make sure that the size of the photo agrees with the directions given by the prospectus, 2) make sure the image is sharp, clear and not distorted, 3) check the colors in the photo against the actual art to make sure they are correct. I am not a professional photographer, but I do manage to take credible photos of my work without paying a pro to do it for me. Here are a few tips that might help those of us who are "photo challenged":

LIGHTING

Make sure you are taking the photo in an area that doesn't cast shadows on the work. Personally, I prefer to take my photos outside on a clear day. I use the front of my garage and I do it between 11:00 am and 12:00 noon. I don't use an elaborate set up; I have simply put a nail into the wood at the appropriate height for the camera and then I rest the painting's stretcher bars on the nails. If you are using paper or canvas, sheets you can put the sticky stuff teachers use to hang students artwork on the wall to the back of the art (after making sure your art is level).
Make sure the sun isn't glaring on the work so there are no shinny surfaces to reflect back at the camera. If you are working with watercolor or pastel then take the photo before you frame it because glass will reflect back at the camera also. I also take the photo before I varnish acrylics to cut down on the glare caused by the varnish.

DISTORTION

Make sure that your camera is aimed squarely at the art. It helps to use a tripod; you can align the front two feet of the tripod squarely with the art so that you aren't taking the photo at an angle that will cause one side of the art to be larger than the other. If necessary use a tape measure to make sure the feet are an equal distance from the art. A tripod also helps to prevent blurring is caused by your hand shaking. Most of us don't think our hand moves when pushing the button, but does.
Use a small hand level to ensure that the camera is not angled either down or up when taking the photo as this will also cause distortion.

CAMERAS

You don't need an expensive camera to take photos of your art. Canon makes an excellent quality digital camera for under $300 and it is very user friendly. As a plus, the newer models also take video so you can use the video setting to record art shows and then upload to Facebook, U-tube and other social network sites.

CAMERA SETTINGS

When taking the initial (raw) photo of your work, be sure to set your camera to take fine or large files and take at least 3 exposures of each artwork.

EDITING YOUR PHOTOS FOR THE WEB

The least expensive and easy to use photo editing program is Photoshop Elements. It has tutorials and is fairly easy to learn. Once the initial photo of the work has been loaded, you can then make additional copies at different resolutions.

YOU SHOULD HAVE THREE TYPES OF IMAGES

A large resolution image (between 1 and 2 MB) to use if you decide to make prints of your work.
A medium/low resolution image to put on your website (between 1 - 2 KB). This size is usually too small to encourage attempts to pirate your image because it probably won't make prints any larger than a 5 x 7 without blurring, but you can add digital watermarking with Elements.
A small image (between 200 and 125 pixels) for thumbnail images and record keeping.
You should keep photo log with both high- and low-resolution photos of your work separately from your desktop computer; the new flash drives are excellent for this. A working copy can be kept there, but be sure and back up your files each month onto a separate disc or jump drive. Be sure to keep the back-up copies of these items in a separate place and up-date your back-ups monthly. Once your records are lost due to computer crashes, natural disaster or any other reason they are gone. Good Luck!Gail

Plan out where and when you are going to take your photos
Assemble your equipment before you start
Allow plenty of time to set up
Be prepared to take the photo, review it and make adjustments
