Is Space Art a Doorway to the Divine?

Space Art is a relatively new genre of art. This type of contemporary art has a way of bringing the amazing beauty of cosmos down to Earth. Spiral galaxies and nebulae of swirling color, shooting stars of magnificent light and planetary worlds waiting to be explored - this kind of stuff inspires me.

Like its close cousin Fantasy Art, Space Art relies on the imagination to a large extent. At the same time, with telescopes like the Hubble beaming back incredible images of the cosmos, Space Art can be very realistic in its representation of the Universe.

Those Hubble images are amazing to behold. I'm hoping that commercial space travel for the masses will become more of a reality in the next 25-30 years. It would be a thrill to see firsthand what astronomers, astronauts and science fiction authors have been talking about for years.

OK, I must confess... I am a science fiction buff. I'm a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars and pretty much anything space or science fiction related... though I don't go to the conventions. (smile)

Truth is, the cosmos is my muse. There is an awe-inspiring beauty to the far off worlds that takes my breath away. Many of the astronauts have commented as much upon seeing Earth from outer space for the first time. It left them speechless.

The best of the Space Art I have seen captures the "awesomeness" of space. Looking out into the vast Universe, perhaps embellished a bit by the artist, I connect with the expansiveness of the space.

Doorway to the Divine? Quite possibly. I sense my "smallness" on the one hand while at the same time feeling one with "All That Is." It's a meditation that helps remind me of the Divine within.

Many of my paintings have Space Art elements. It's been a creative evolution as my art has grown to include spiral nebulae, shooting stars and planetary orbs. There is a deeper symbology surrounding some of these elements as well.

The planetary orbs represent worlds of awareness and consciousness... like worlds of feeling and thought. These inner worlds have a topography all their own. Some thoughts race like rivers while feelings can have an "oceanic" quality. Mountains and valleys of awareness and experience dot the inner landscape as well.

There are even clichés that say something to the effect, "he/she is off in their own world." Perhaps this language reflects a soul awareness that the inner worlds of the spirit are just as real as the outer worlds depicted in Space Art.

Space Art may not share the same place in art history with the classics of old or with contemporary modern artists. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if the ability of Space Art to inspire a grander vision of the Self is something art historians may consider in the future.

In the end, I believe this is one of Art's more nobler callings.
