Three Underpainting Practices for Oil Painting

The practice of underpainting is almost as large an area of study as oil painting.

The purpose of an underpainting is to establish the composition and overall light/dark pattern while initiating the development of volumes and substance to the forms.

An underpainting allows you to envision the totality of the pictorial idea. In addition to correcting drawing errors the underpainting's primary purpose is to fix the all important Notan, which is the Japanese term for light/dark harmony.

Generally speaking, there are three types of underpainting: there is the fully worked up monochromatic grisaille. This is the academic approach where little is left to chance. However, the classical grisaille of mixed white and black possesses an Achilles Heel. As the white paint ages it becomes more translucent and the black paint in the grey mix will dominate. Hence the overall picture will darken significantly, especially if there was extensive correcting of the grisaille.

If a basic oil/turpentine medium is employed this darkening is all but guaranteed. The solution is to use a thixotropic resin based medium -- such as Venice Turpentine -- which suspends the pigment and nullifies the oil's interminable darkening. Despite its name Venice Turpentine is a resin not a solvent. A confusing but important distinction.

The Renaissance approach often employed the verdaccio which is a green-hued underpainting. Michelangelo's unfinished Entombment exhibits his painting process from beginning to finish. The central Christ figure is a wholly resolved verdaccio underpainting.

The optical grisaille resolves many of the problems of the grey mixes of the classical grisaille. The imprimatura holds the light middle tones; raw umber and charcoal gray produces the darker values; and concludes with a select impasto of white lead paint that supports the highest values of the overpainting as the oil paint grows more translucent over time.

The final appearance of an optical grisaille is a painting that exhibits a higher key of color than what can be achieved by an academic grisaille or even direct alla prima.

The key for achieving a translucent grisaille is the thixotropic medium of stand oil, Venice turpentine and Damar varnish diluted with turpentine.

In oil painting your medium is to painting what sauces are to French cuisine. The all-too-common medium of linseed oil and turpentine actually degrades the paints robbing them of their lustre. You can buy ready-made painting mediums in the art store, but in my opinion this is like pouring Kraft Thousand Island dressing onto an exquisitely prepared gourmet meal.

When this painting was on display for the first time, China has just experienced a decade catastrophe and Chinese people has come out from a man-made disaster. During this disaster, Chinese farmers living the bottom suffered the most. After the Third Plenary Session, people's oppressed mood needed to be released. At that time, Father came to people's eyes. Facing it, how could those conscientious people not feel dejected and burst into tears?

After Father launched, there were lots of praises mixed with numbers of critics. Critics accused the Father of defaming the image of socialist farmers. Socialist farmers should be healthy, happy and high spirited. Obviously such judgment was backward, but it could not stop the emancipation of thought and freedom of emotional expression. After National Youth Art Exhibition, Father was published in Art magazine with the current issue of two hundred thousand, which has set the highest record in art magazine.

Drawing and Painting In Italy

New York city arguably remains the single greatest modern and contemporary art scene in the world. I adore it's energy and unmatched cultural exchange. However, picking up that charcoal and putting it to paper while in Italy, specifically the region of Tuscany, well... that is very different. With that first intended visual description, you have instantly joined the ranks... and these are revered and exalted ranks... of those who decided to make a very human statement... the artistic statement at it's highest levels. I see art as being perhaps the best narrative on humanity. It is either the subject of the human condition (narrative, historical painting or portraiture) or it is simply the personal translation of what is around us... profound enough to the individual to be worthy of canvas and paper. This kind of statement, of course, can come in the form of writing, music, performance and fine art. Drawing and painting in Italy though, is very much like driving at the Indianapolis 500 or performing at Carnegie Hall... the act alone is certainly amazing and enjoyable enough, but the company that you keep is historically staggering.

The Renaissance was a period that started in the region of Tuscany and it represented the return to the Classical emphasis on humanity. The artwork produced during this period continues to be a benchmark of excellence and an inspiration for all who follow in the footsteps as painters, sculptors, designers and architects. If we put the history aside, if one is not as well versed in the stories and the periods, Italy still inspires those who draw and paint in ways that few other places on earth can. If you are in the right location (and there are many) a simple turn of the head can reveal public art, incredible structures, classic designs and natural beauty all coming together.

Some even see drawing and painting in Italy as something akin to climbing Mount Everest. The obvious major difference here is the physical toll and personal peril involved in that one time, personal accomplishment. My advice, unlike for that dangerous and rewarding travel to the peak of the mountain top, is to try and "climb" towards this creative summit as often as possible. Try to experience the feeling of creating where creativity was first appreciated the most. The quote from the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer sums up the unique appreciation for art during the Renaissance as he compares the status of the artist in his native Germany to Italy: "Here (Italy) I really am somebody, whereas at home I am just a hack." Times have certainly changed, but those brushstrokes somehow, still feel indescribably different when applied in my art studio in Lucca or looking out at that Tuscan landscape. The food and wine aren't bad either.

Painting Water Birds - Still Waters and Reflections of Color - Plein Air

Many species of water birds gather at the estuary mouth at this time of year and due to recent heavy rains the inlet will soon break its bank, create a huge torrent and connect with the sea. Schools of fish are detected by hungry water birds both small and large. The area provides many different subjects for an artist to paint as the channel meanders through dense thickets of twisted paperbark trees overhanging masses of reedy banks. The network of sandy tracks offers many vantage points so I chose my subject and set up the easel.

I was intrigued by the colorful reflections in still water contrasting with dark shadows of paperbark trees. Transparent wispy clouds caused the late afternoon sun to create an orange cast over everything. To capture this orange glow, I under painted the whole canvas with a thin wash of bright orange. Shadows were painted next before they changed, then light areas followed by the colorful reflections in the middle distance.

Two dominant paperbark trees in the foreground and on either side of the subject were brushed on. This provided an important lead into the picture, helped along with the reedy banks on both sides. The far-away headland was included, partially misted by rising seaspray from distant breakers.

There are always distractions when painting outdoors. The wind, annoying insects or inquisitive people asking the same old questions. On this occasion I was interrupted by a family of squabbling crows, a species which seemed out of place here. Nevertheless the fracas continued. With practice, however, the plein air painter is able to tune in with nature and ignore distractions, as when the mind is still, concentration becomes focused.

My orange under painting was beginning to show through as specks of glowing light throughout the painting. White twisted trunks of paperbark trees were painted along with their mirror-like reflections in the still glassy water. What's important now is how the paint is applied. Dark areas will be thin and transparent as opposed to the application of lights which will be thick and opaque.

As afternoon turned into dusk, the misty seaspray descended over the still water. My painting was close to completion. All that remained was the inclusion of a water bird for a focal point. There were many to choose from. A clumsy pelican perhaps? Certainly not a crow! In fact I could not resist but choose the beautiful white egret. This elegant bird with stilt-like legs stalking its prey contrasted well against the dark reflections of paperbark trees.

Custom Spray Painting a Bicycle

Before you start airbrushing, accustomize yourself with how your airbrush handles. Start on a piece of card to practice, until you are confident with how your airbrush works.

Airbrushes use compressed air to spray the pigment from the gun. You can use an electric air compressor or canned propellant. For the first timers out there, the canned propellant is the cheapest and easiest route to take, electric air compressors tend to cost a lot of money. Either will be fine for this exercise, I used canned propellant for portability.

To start with I disassembled the bike so I could prepare the metal work. (Making sure I remembered how to put it back together). Using a fine grade sandpaper I sanded down the frame of the bike to reveal the bare metal underneath and to key in the primer. Next the primer is applied using the airbrush and a 1.3 to 2.5 mm paint nozzle to ensure even coverage. The primer is then sanded with 600 grit weight wet-dry sandpaper before the base coat is applied on top.

Use the same size nozzle as before to apply the base coat ensuring even coverage and not to spray too much in one area. Runs are easy to sort out with gentle sanding but if possible avoidance is the best course.

Once the base coat is thoroughly dry, a clear coat is applied on top, this protects the base coat from scratches, dirt and gives a nice shine. Before the design work can be airbrushed on, the area to be sprayed must be wet sanded with 600 to 1500 grit weight sandpaper, being very careful not to sand through to the base coat. For very uneven blemishes 600 grit sand paper is best. If the paintwork looks smooth and blemish free 1000 to 1500 will do.

This will smooth out any imperfections and give enough tooth for the airbrush paint to adhere to the surface. Sand the surface until it is uniformly dull. Keep the sandpaper wet, it may be easier to get a bucket of water and keep it close at hand. Once sanded to a dull finish use a soft cloth or soft paper towel and some degreaser to clean and remove oily fingerprints and any other muck that may be on the paint work. Dry the de-greased part immediately with a clean cloth or towel if it is allowed to evaporate rings will appear and spoil the final design.

This is now where your own creative flair comes in to play. Using a mask, I used frisket film, draw out your design, then using a scalpel and a sharp blade, cut out the different colour sections of your picture, being careful not to cut yourself. When finished stick your complete design on the frame, with all the cut out pieces in place.

Now one by one peel off each colour section and spray that colour. This is where the practice earlier comes in handy. You need to start spraying before you get to the area you want to paint and spray just passed where you want to stop spraying, that way you will get a nice even coverage and hopefully no runs. Once you have finished that section allow the paint to dry completely then replace the film over that section and move onto the next colour or section. Carry on till your design is complete.

When the design is finished and completely dry a final clear coat is applied as before over the top sealing and finishing your design. Now put the kettle on, make a cup of tea and admire your work.

The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of his most famous and most expensive pieces of art to have ever been sold. It's popularity is perhaps due to the painting's effective transformation of a simple human act of compassion into a work of art that encompasses much more than just a simple kiss between a man and a woman. Taking Pictures and Painting From Photographs Requires An Understanding of Composition

A change of subject is good for the artist as new visual stimulation is refreshing and prevents stagnation. After painting many landscapes I decided, one day, to travel inland to one of the many National Parks and seek out water scenes and rock pools for new subject material. Characteristic patterns of reflected light on the water surface was my interest in this subject, therefore, early afternoon would be the ideal time for taking pictures.

Due to the dense bush and steep gully, my preferred Plein Air technique was out of the question. So I packed the camera and began my long walk along the riverbank. The pleasant sound of running water helped me concentrate on taking quality photographs which would provide references for future paintings. The area is very isolated and the only spectators were in the form of wildlife. Inquisitive kangaroos were watching every move I made.

Fast flowing water meandering through a steep gully is an interesting subject as there are many alcoves and rock pools. I have painted these pools many times and due to recent heavy rains the subject appeared different yet again. It wasn't long before my attention was caught by a beautiful rock pool. I was high up and looking down on this delightful scene. Reflections of yellows and greens from overhanging peppermint trees were complimented by browns and ochres reflected by the many rocks.

To paint from photographs an understanding of composition is essential. Therefore I paid particular attention to framing my subject correctly in the camera's view finder before taking pictures. Before moving on, I took many more pictures adjusting the zoom lens accordingly.

I returned to this beautiful rock pool after an hour to discover that the surrounding peppermint trees were dappled with dots of yellow and orange light adding to the effect of this stunning scene. I quickly captured it by taking more photographs. Not wanting to leave yet I sat for a while absorbing and memorizing. The rock pool displayed all the necessary elements, color, contrast, composition. However, the difference between a photograph and painting is use of artist licence. I will certainly include personal touches which will add interest and identify the artwork as my own.

Where there's water, there's life. A rising trout or dark blue kingfisher stalking its prey would provide a center of interest. Perhaps a bright red dragonfly hovering above the rippling water. Now that would certainly catch the eye!

Painting Beach Scenes in Oils

Painting a beach scene is not difficult. I always start with a very simple sketch. Sometimes I just draw in the horizon line. I always measure this, there's nothing worse than a sloping horizon. Sketch in a rough drawing of any headland or landscape. I always start painting the sky and clouds, softening and lightening them towards the horizon. Blend in the clouds using a palette knife, keeping the tops where the sun hits, brighter.

You can use a large, long handled, flat brush or like me, a palette knife does the trick. If you're using a brush, buy a good quality bright, long handled flat brush which is stiff enough for oil painting. For finer detail, a short handled, round brush works well. My brushes last for years because I always clean them thoroughly with turps at the end of a day's painting and then rub them over a bar of soap and warm water. Treat them with care and they will serve you well. If you are using a palette knife for painting, I prefer a medium size with a fine, rounded edge. Test them out before buying, as they vary so much in weight and performance.

The horizon line should be darkest on the horizon. Blend in this line so that it doesn't look like you've reached the end of the world!

Add emerald green to your blue (I use phthallo blue for my beach paintings, but you could also use ultramarine). Lighten your paint with a little white as you go down your canvas or board, making it quite a light green towards the shore.

Use your palette knife and some thick white paint (Titanium White) to roughen up the surf near the shore. I mix just a little Cadmium Red into the pale green paint that you have just used to make the wet sand. For the dryer sand I mix some Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red and White, perhaps a little of the leftover bluish green for the damp sand. For the dry sand I just use the yellow, red and white, making sure that it is darker nearest you and lighter in the distance.

If there are any sail boats in the distance, put those in now with a thick stroke of white paint using the palette knife or a small rounded brush, depending on the size of the boat. You could add some seagulls using the same method.

Add some people, children, dogs and umbrellas to your beach scene to add life and interest. The most important thing to remember is perspective. Decide on how large the people and umbrellas will be nearest you and make them progressively smaller in the distance. Also have the brightest, strongest colors in the foreground and soften them in the distance. People in the distance need only be a shape representing people.
